12/2/2020

For this week’s Grab and Go Activity we will be making ornaments that you can hang on your Christmas tree or use to decorate your house this winter! This week we will be offering two different ornament crafts; one for younger children and one for teens.

Crystal Snowflake
Picture
Materials
Included in your craft kit:
•  Pipe cleaners
•  String
•  Borax
What you’ll need from home:
• Pencil
• Large glass or plastic container that can hold hot water
• Scissors
• Hot water
• Food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Cut your pipe cleaners into thirds. Make a snowflake by wrapping two pieces together, making an ‘X’. Take the third piece and wrap it around the middle of the ‘X’.
  2. Tie one end of the string to the snowflake and the other end around a pencil. Trim the snowflake and adjust the string to make sure it does not touch the bottom or sides of your container when placed inside. (We wanted a bigger snowflake so we changed our container to a large plastic Pyrex measuring cup.)
  3. Next, prepare a concentrated borax solution; the more concentrated the solution, the bigger the crystals will be!
    * Hot water will allow you to dissolve more borax in the water because heated water molecules will move further apart, making space for more borax. This is why we want to make sure to boil the water before incorporating the borax.
    *
For every cup of water, you will need 3-4 tbsp of borax. Alternatively, you can slowly dissolve the borax into the water until you notice that it is no longer dissolving.
  4. Once your solution is ready, place your snowflake into your container, making sure it doesn’t touch the sides and bottom. Leave them to sit overnight and then pull them out in the morning to see if the crystals have formed! Place them on a paper towel to dry.
  5. Hang them up as decorations or hang them on your Christmas tree!
Tip: When cleaning up, use hot water to help scrape off any crystals out of the container.
Beaded Snowflake

Materials
Included in your craft kit:
•  Beads
•  Pipe cleaners
What you’ll need from home:
•  Scissors
Instructions:
  1. Before your child can begin threading the beads onto the pipe cleaners, you first need to make the snowflakes. To do this, first cut the pipe cleaners in half. You will need three pipe-cleaner halves to make one snowflake. Wrap two together to make an ‘X’ and then wrap the third piece around the middle to finish the snowflake.
  2. Let your child put beads on the pipe cleaners however they please OR incorporate some math into the activity. Practice counting the beads onto the pipe cleaners together! You can also try asking your child to create a color pattern on the pipe cleaner using the beads. Can they put two pink beads and four purple beads on the pipe cleaner?
  3. Fold the ends of the pipe cleaner over the beads to secure them in place and tie some yarn around your snowflake so you can hang it up!
