About Alma
Alma “Woodsey” Thomas is known for her abstract paintings, often composed of patterns created by vivid, irregular shapes. Alma was born in Georgia in 1891. Her family moved to Washington D.C. in her early childhood to avoid racial violence in the South. After graduating from Howard University, a historical Black college, Alma taught art in Washington D.C. public schools for 35 years. After retiring, Alma was able to focus on her art full-time and became the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art. Her distinctive style was also showcased in the White House three separate times.
Supplies in your Grab and Go Kit
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Heavy Duty Mixed Media Paper
Supplies from Home
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Optional: a straight edge, bowls, or other objects you can trace to draw geometric shapes
Instructions
  1. Sketch your composition lightly on your paper
Alma Woodsey Thomas found inspiration for her paintings in nature, music, and even outer space! In planning her paintings, Alma made light pencil outlines of larger shapes. To get a geometric feel, you can use a straight edge. To help create circular guides, you can trace a bowl or plate. For more of a challenge, paint a natural landscape in Alama’s style. Spend some time thinking about the direction your patterns will go, the contrast between colors, and the patterns you’ll use to represent nature.
  2. Choose your colors
Before you start, think about which colors you’d like to use. You can mix some of the paints in your grab and go kit to create different combinations.
  3. Fill in your composition by painting lines of similar, but not identical shapes. Alama used irregular rectangles, triangles, and circles to create her patterns, and often alternated between colors and thicknesses from line to line. But most importantly, have fun and let your creativity flow!
