Grab & Go Activity: Blackout Poetry

For this week’s Grab & Go Activity, We’ll be creating blackout poetry! Blackout poems are a non-formal style of “found poetry,” in which the poet selects words from a magazine or book page to create a poem. The poet then blacks out the words they don’t want to use in their poem with thick lines, drawings, or other forms of visual art.
Materials in your Kit:
  • 1 magazine*
  • 1 book*
  • 1 black chisel tip marker
*These have been removed from the library’s collection because we replaced them with a newer copy, or to make room for new books. We do NOT want them back - please recycle.
Materials from home:
  • Pencil
  • Optional - Markers, colored pencils, or crayons to add color to your blackout poems
Instructions

  1. Flip through your magazine or book, and choose a page that catches your attention. Carefully cut or tear it out. Place this on top of your magazine to make sure your black marker doesn’t bleed through onto your furniture.

  2. Scan the words on the page and see if there are any that come together to form a theme. It helps to keep an open mind!

  3. Circle the words and phrases you may want to include in your poem lightly with pencil.

  4. Read through your circled words and phrases. When you’ve decided which ones you want to keep, circle or box them in with your sharpie. Remember - non-formal poetry doesn’t have to be grammatically correct or “make sense.”

  5. Come up with a way to black out the words you aren’t including in your poem - get creative! You can simply cross unused words out with thick lines, or create a drawing on top of them related to your poem. Feel free to use any markers or colored pencils from home to add to your art. If you’d like to change the order of your selected words, you can use arrows or dashes to show the order your poem should be read in.
