Grab & Go Activity: DIY Sloth Plushies

4/28/2021

For this week’s grab and go activity, we’ll be making our very own pocket sloth plushies!
Picture
Materials Included in your Grab & Go Kit
  • 3 pieces of felt
  • 1 embroidery needle
  • Embroidery thread
  • Cotton Stuffing
  • Sloth plushie pattern
Materials From Home
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
Instructions
  1. Cut out your sloth plushie pattern
  2. Trace your cut out pattern pieces onto your felt - make sure to trace the body of your sloth twice to make a front and back. On darker colored fabric, light colored pencils work well.
  3. Cut out your felt pieces
  4. Cut a piece of embroidery thread about an arm length long. Divide the embroidery thread in two, one side with two strands, and the other with four.
  5. Using your thinner piece of embroidery thread, stitch the face markings, eyes, and nose onto your sloth face using your stitch of choice.
  6. With your pencil, lightly draw a mouth on your sloth. Using the 4-strand piece of your embroidery thread, use a backstitch to embroider the mouth.
  7. Sew your sloth face to one of your body pieces. As you need more embroidery thread, continue to cut off arm length pieces and divide them in half.
  8. Using a whipstitch, sew the edges of your two body pieces together, leaving an inch open at the end
  9. Fill your sloth with the cotton stuffing. You can use your pencil to gently push stuffing down into your sloth’s legs.
  10. Stitch your sloth closed and enjoy!
Trying this project with young kids? Use craft or fabric glue to attach your face pieces for an easier project. Allow glue to dry fully before stitching your sloth together.

Looking for a challenge? Use your leftover felt to sew a plant snack for your new sloth friend!
