Grab & Go Activity: Fall Felt Bookmarks

11/25/2020

Quit dog-earring your books (and ours, too) by creating your own felt corner bookmarks! By following the instructions below, you’ll create your own book-monster or heart-shaped bookmark to slide over the corner of your book, saving your place for later.

Materials
In Grab & Go Kit:
  • Felt
  • Craft glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Bookmark template
Needed from home:
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery needle and thread (optional)
Instructions:
  • Based on which type of bookmark you’d like to create, cut out the template included in your grab and go kit (also available here: Bookmark Templates).

  • Trace the template onto the piece of felt you’d like to use as the main body of your bookmark, and cut it out.

  • Create monster parts and decorations for your bookmark by cutting out different shapes and sizes out of your remaining felt. Get creative! A strip of triangles make fun teeth or eye lashes, circles turn into polka-dots, a Y can make a forked tongue, etc.
Picture
  • Fold the main felt piece of your bookmark in half to get a sense of how your completed bookmark will look. Arrange your decorations until you like how your creature looks. With a bit of fabric glue, glue your embellishments and decorations onto your main bookmark - but be careful! At this point we do NOT want to glue both sides of the main bookmark together! It may be easier to leave your bookmark unfolded to prevent accidentally gluing it closed.
    • Looking for a challenge? Instead of using glue, add embellishments and applique details to your bookmark with embroidery instead! Check out this introduction to embroidery and the most common stitches on CreativeBug!* https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/single/embroidery-sampler
      • *Login to CreativeBug with your library card number at www.creativebug.org/lib/basaltlibrary
  • Once the glue from your decorations is dry, glue one edge adjacent to your folded edge shut to create a corner pocket. Allow this glue to dry for 24 hours before using your bookmark!

  • Start reading! When you need to take a break, slide your corner bookmark over the front cover and pages read to keep your place.

  • ¡Empiece a leer!
