Grab & Go Activity with the ArtBase: Tin Art

12/9/2020

This is a popular art form that has been passed down through the generations and originated in Mexico. Artists use tin to create sculptures, ornaments, and picture frames. Tin art is produced when pieces of tin are cut, shaped, punched, and embossed with a pattern.

Make an ornament, wall hanging, coaster, table piece, or something just for fun. Keep for yourself or give as a gift to a loved one—the options are endless.

Materials:
Provided
  • Assorted flexible sheets of metal
  • Tin Foil
  • Tool for metal tooling
  • Sharpies
  • Photos with examples
Supplies you may have at home
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • String (optional if making an ornament of hanging)
Instructions:
  1. Using a scrap piece of paper or the back of this paper, plan what you will create. Think about shape and size and make a template.  You can use this template when embossing into the metal.
  2. Find the sheets of thin metal in envelope and decide which type of metal you will work with and cut this to the desired size.
  3. Find the tool with a pointy end and a flat end. Cut your template out to the exact size you want your finished product.
  4. Transfer this to the metal sheet by laying it directly on top of the metal and tape on side to hold your design in place. You may want to tape both the template and metal to your table or flat workspace to keep in one place while embossing.
  5. Use your tool to complete design by pressing firmly on top of the paper. Check to make sure the pressure was enough to translate to metal by lifting your template.
  6. You might find that you need to go over your design more than once depending on how heavy you want your lines to look on your metal.
  7. If needed, cut your metal to the shape you had planned.
  8. At this point, some artists choose to use color (Sharpies) to complete their design or pattern.
  9. You have enough metal to make a couple of projects so have fun!
