Manualidad Para Llevar a Casa

10/2/2021

Although not created on what would be considered a traditional loom, today’s craft is inspired by an ancient Mexican weaving technique called Zapotec weaving. The Zapotec are an ancient people, also known as the “cloud people” that lived in the Oaxacan Valley in Mexico. The Zapotec people are responsible for the building the great cities of Monte Alban and Mitla as well as leaving behind evidence of their unique weaving traditions.

Materials in each kit:
  • Paper plates
  • Yarn of different colors
Materials needed from home:
  • Scissors
Instructions:
  1. Cut the paper plate petals in UNEVEN numbers: In order for the weaving pattern to work, there must be an uneven number of petals. Before cutting into your plate, we recommend you mark the petals on your plate. This will help make sure you have the correct number of petals as well as assure they are much or less the same size (the petal sizes don’t have to be exactly the same). Poke a small hole in the center, this will be used when creating the loom.

  2. Create your loom: You’re going to take your yarn and slot it on one side of a petal, leaving a tail of yarn in the back, and wrap it around the front across to the opposite corresponding slot. Wrap it around the petal and then string it across again, creating an ‘x’ shape in the front.

  3. Then wrap the yarn around the petal next to the one you just wrapped, string across the front and around the opposite petal, and then around the petal next to that one. Repeat the process all the way around the flower.

  4. When you get to the last slot, wrap your yarn over and under the intersecting point and pull taught. This will make sure the loom remains centered.

  5. Next, pass the string through the small hole in the middle of the plate. On the back of the flower, tie the tail of the yarn that you left at the beginning, with what is left of the yarn that you just wove in front to secure your loom and you are ready to weave.

  6. Take your colored yarn and tie one end to the loom (double knot it). The pattern you are going to weave is under-over-under-over all the way around. If you want to switch colors, you can trim off the yarn and tie the new color to the end of the old one on the loom and then all you have to do is continue the pattern.

  7. When you’re done weaving, you can tie the end of your yarn to the loom and tuck it under to hide it. Then you’re done!

Tejido - Mexico

¡Ya has terminado!
