New Movies at the Library!

Death Bed: The Bed That Eats  1977 R

Movies are bizarre projects if you think about them. Enormously expensive and labor intensive a finished film is the culmination of huge collective effort, which is sometimes not exactly what the director, screenwriter or cast had expected, or is sometimes so ridiculous as to approach the sublime.
Brigsby Bear 2017 PG-13

If you were raised by Television like I was Brigsby Bear is a film which will resonate with you on a humorous and emotional level.  The debut film from SNL star and Youtube comedy genius Kyle Mooney Brigsby Bear is the story of James, an adult who has never left the bunker he was raised in.

Death Bed: The Bed that Eats (Available on Kanopy) is a film that is either a staggering work of heartbreaking genius, or is a mish mash of half-baked ideas which were jammed into the title of the film.  Spoiler Alert: This is the story of a haunted bed which eats all kinds of stuff, fried chicken, apples, people.  Casablanca this is not. If you were hoping for a metaphorical bed that eats people spiritually or an allegorical bed that consumes our lives you may be disappointed. But if you ever wanted to see a film about a literal bed that eats people it’s time to strap in for a wild ride.
Poet Samuel Butler once remarked that “Every man's work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself “which makes Death Bed: The Bed that Eats truly a page torn from the diary of a madman.  Death Bed: The Bed that Eats is narrated by a character that claims to be 19th century author Aubrey Beardsley. This is not explained at all. Why is Aubrey Beardsley trapped behind the Death Bed? Did he create the Death Bed? What is this mystery?!
If nothing else Death Bed: The Bed that Eats is an inspirational classic. I you are an aspiring director and anyone ever says ‘oh you are too crazy to make a movie’ or ‘no one wants to see a film about furniture that eats’  you can break this one out. This is the Citizen Kane of hungry bed movies.

Rated R for Some Nudity, Terrible Plot, and Hungry Beds.

While trapped in the shelter James has spent his entire life learning about the world from Brigsby Bear, a surreal version of Teddy Ruxpin or H.R. Puffenstuff created by his kidnapper parents (James father is played by Luke Skywalker himself) as an experiment. When his experiment ends James is thrust out into the world where he is left to finish the story of Brigsby on his own.
Brigsby Bear is story for misfits about a man who uses his creativity to heal his own wounds. Much like movies that have come before like Ed Wood,  Frank, or this year's The Disaster Artist, Brigsby Bear shows us someone who uses art to express their own inner turmoil in a way that may not exactly communicate very well, but is both cathartic and beautiful.

Rated PG-13 for Some profanity and Teenage behavior
