Arpilleras, meaning “Burlap” in Spanish, are works of South American folk-art incorporating applique, embroidery, and patchwork. The most famous arpilleras and arpilleristas stem from Chile. The women, or arpilleristas, that created these arpilleras more often than not depicted sad scenes from their lives during the Pinochet dictatorship. Today we will be creating collage art inspired by these beautiful works of art.

Materials in kit
  • Construction Paper
  • Origami Paper
Materials from home
  • Paint, crayons or markers
  • Glue
Instructions:
Make your Painted Paper
To begin, we will make our painted paper first. If you do not have paint at home, feel free to use crayons or markers to give your construction paper some visual texture, or feel free to use the paper as is. Before you begin your landscape collage, make sure your painted paper is dry!

Making your Arpillera Landscape
  1. To create a mountain landscape, we will need to include a background, middle ground, and foreground in our piece. If you were looking through a camera, the foreground of the image would be the part that appears to be the closest to you while the background will appear to be the furthest away from you.
  2. Take your painted paper and tear or cut it into a mountain shape. Glue these mountains near the top of your paper, make sure to leave space for the sky! Continue by tearing out another mountain shape and glue it below the first couple of mountains.
  3. Once you’re done with your mountainscape, you can cut out animal or people paper figures to add to your image. Draw stitches along the different shapes on your artwork to look like the stitches of an actual arpillera piece. Or add a couple of houses on some of your mountains. Below you will find instructions on how to make an origami house.

To make smaller houses, cut your origami paper into four equal pieces.

Finish your Arpillera Piece
Add some finishing touches using paint, crayons or markers. Maybe your mountain has trees or there are a couple of clouds and birds in the sky. We had some yarn laying around so we hole punched along the edge and stitched our yarn around the entire piece.

Arte De Arpillera

Picture
