National Hispanic Heritage Month, or LatinX Heritage Month, is observed annually from September 15 to October 15 to recognize and celebrate the important cultural and societal contributions of Americans from or with ancestors from Mexico, Central and South America, Spain, and Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean. To celebrate, we have compiled a list of our favorite books by LatinX and Hispanic authors for readers of all ages.

Curious about the differences between the terms "LatinX," "Latino/a," "Chicano/a," and "Hispanic" and when to use which term? We recommend this article from Exlporatorim, a public learning laboratory located in San Francisco, for a guide to these terms. We also recommend this article from NPR—Shereen Marisol Meraji, host of the NPR podcast Code Switch, interviews a director of the Pew Research Center about a recent survey that yielded interesting findings about which of these terms Latino adults in the U.S. use most frequently to describe themselves.
