Worry Dolls from Guatemala

9/25/2021

For today’s craft we will be making Muñecas quitapena, or Worry dolls. These small, hand-made dolls originate from Guatemala and are actually meant to help children alleviate their troubles. As the old Mayan legend goes, children will tell their worries to the muñeca (doll), place the doll under their pillow before they go to sleep, and in the morning the dolls will have given the children advice on how to eliminate their worries. The origin of the Muñecas quitapena actually represent a legend about a Mayan princess named Ixmucane (icks-moo-ca-neigh ca is pronounced like CO in complete) who was gifted an item from the sun god that helped her solve any problem a human could worry about. https://www.commonhope.org/the-legend-of-the-guatemalan-worry-doll/

Materials:
  • A wooden Bead
  • Fabric Scraps
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Embroidery floss

Instructions:

  1. Make the hair for your worry doll: take whatever color you want your doll’s hair to be and wrap it around your fingers a couple of times to make a big loop.
  2. Make your doll’s head: Bend the pipe cleaner in half and thread the “hair” loop through it until it’s at the bend of the pipe cleaner. Grab your bead and bead both ends of the bent pipe cleaner through the bead all the way to the end (by the “hair” loop). Cut the loop and tie a knot to secure the hair.
  3. Make your doll’s body: Bend both pipe cleaner ends upwards to make two legs and then bend the ends out to make the arms of your doll.
  4. Dress your doll: Take the fabric scraps that you have and create pants, a shirt, or a dress for your doll. Use yarn to secure the fabric to your doll and you’re done!
